WRITING
WHILE NOT the best Halloween costume, writing is nonetheless Jake's primary activity in the arts. Besides working as a tech writer and freelance consultant, Jake produces original works in prose and verse, writes and edits screenplays, translates poetry, reviews books (and comic books) (and music), and dirties his hands with the theoretical, critical, and scholarly side of things.
Recently, Jake had an extended stint writing book reviews for the Washington Examiner newspaper. Otherwise, the work of poetry translation (from Italian and Spanish) now occupies the bulk of his time; on occasional weekends, however, Jake still frets over a new system of prosody he's developing, called Emphatics.

Background
AFTER running weekly poetry readings at the old Dharma Coffeehouse in Fairfax, and doing copious newspaper work in high school (editing, reporting, layouts), Jake took off for Sarah Lawrence College to hone his skills at making clear presentations of ideas that interest very few people indeed. It was that or the circus, and he chose that.
Since then, his activities have ranged widely, but somehow he always ends up with a microphone in one hand and a poem in the other.

Tango translations.
SINCE October 2005, Jake has recited a tango lyric every week, translated into English, at the Divino Lounge milonga run by Murat Erdemsel. Jake's translations are posted, with the Spanish originals, at TangoDC.com. (NOTE: A "milonga" is a tango social, for the curious among ye.)

The Mousiad.
Jake has been translating the works of Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837) for several years, and in 2005 the European journal RISL (International Review of Leopardi Studies) published the first installment of a long narrative satire called, for the sake of brevity, The Mousiad.
