Coined by Angus Fletcher in a blurb for the New York Review of Books' handy one-volume reprint of Anatomy of Melancholy by Robert Burton (1577-1640), the word's first appearance occurs in the sentence: "[Burton's book is] One of the maddest and most perfectly paranoid, obsessively organized, etceterative assaults on the feeble human powers of concentration ever attempted." |
